States track students’ college and career readiness from elementary through high school. Many factors identify students as being at risk of dropping out of high school. One of these factors is being pregnant or being a parent before the age of 21. Another is repetition at school. Regardless of the risk factor, these students find it difficult to prepare for middle School and career unlike their non-at-risk peers. The Dear Future Me program seeks to close this gap by equipping at-risk students with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

The 9-week course includes ten learning modules and numerous interactive activities. Weekly group empowerment coaching sessions track progress and provide accountability and recommendations for the best outcome.

Rhonda Simmons, Founder/CEO of TSEFI, said, “Just before moving to Texas in 2003 with my active duty husband, I asked God to show me how I could positively impact others. Through a course at Central Texas College, The Problems with Children and Adolescents, I first learned of the alarming statistics regarding teenage mothers in Texas. At that moment I knew what I had been guided to do and that we had been sent to Texas for a divine purpose. For the past 15 years, I have made it my mission to equip myself with the tools to impact teenage mothers. I furthered my education, became an educator and administrator in Texas at Title I schools, was a foster parent, and associated with other like-minded nonprofits. The Dear Future Me program is the next step in the vision I had almost 20 years ago.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (2020), Texas has the ninth highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States. Additionally, The Texas Tribune (2022) reported that Texas has the highest number of teenage repeat births in the nation. Teen moms are the benefactors of everything TSEFI does. The goal of our Dear Future Me program is to support teenage mothers and other at-risk students as they intentionally plan for their future.

There are many sources that can help TSEFI reach teenage mothers with our Dear Future Me program. For example, organizations such as the Department of Family Protective Services or the Boys and Girls Club of America have similar missions to those of TSEFI.
