INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) announced “e-commerce exchange zones” at the headquarters of each district for the public to complete their purchases and transactions online.

IMPD encourages community members to use the front parking lots or the lobby when meeting people.

The IMPD said in a statement:

“As more and more people conduct private business transactions online, there has been an increase in crime nationwide in relation to these transactions. Therefore, IMPD takes a proactive approach to deter crime by creating a secure online shopping zone, or “e-commerce zone”. With the aim of reducing the likelihood of citizens falling victim to scams or more serious crimes; IMPD has designated the front parking lot or lobby (if available) as a safe area for online shopping. These areas are under video surveillance 24 hours a day.

“Citizens who conduct private business transactions by responding to ads in newspapers or through online retailers such as E-Bay, Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook, etc. can safely complete their business transactions. While law enforcement officials are not involved in verifying, monitoring, or facilitating private transactions, this program is designed to provide a known, well-informed, and secure place to conduct business. Citizens can ask the other person to meet in this e-commerce area, but if the other party refuses, chances are it is a sign of “buyer beware”.

The IMPD said it is not responding to a specific incident, but is taking a proactive approach to providing places where citizens feel safe to meet an unknown individual to complete their private transaction.
